The Watson Chapel School District millage was passed for the construction of a new high school building last month and the first step to the construction is obtaining an architect for the design.

The school board held a special meeting Monday, September 19th for a work session to go over the portfolios of eleven architects RFQs inquiring about designing the high school. A point system was used to rate each portfolio and Lewis Architect had the highest points combined and the board voted to hire them for their architect services.

Superintendent Tom Wilson spoke during the meeting about their goal of constructing a two-story high school with an auditorium and P.E. Gymnasium. The construction square footage will be based on the enrollment at the high school. The board also based their points on the history of the firm, number of high schools designed, design type, rates including charges and manner of payment, and the use of local architects when possible.

Deltaplex news was present at the work session and spoke to John Hayden the Executive Director of Support Services after the meeting to get his thoughts on the board’s final choice.

The board also clarified that the state is paying 80% of the cost for the new high school’s construction.
