Political newcomer Steven Shaner took the lead early and never looked back Tuesday night as he defeated Lloyd Franklin Jr., to claim the Democratic Party nomination for Ward 2 on the Pine Bluff City Council in a runoff.

Also Tuesday, incumbent District 13 Justice of the Peace Brenda Bishop-Gaddy defeated challenger Jeff Edwards in the only two races on the ballot.

Mike Adam, chairman of the Jefferson County Board of Election Commissioners announced the final unofficial results in both races.

Only 810 votes were cast in the two races, 540 of them on election day, another 190 early and 80 by absentee.

Shaner picked up 62.63 percent of the total vote, won all three polling sites and increased his lead as the night went on.

He will appear with Greg Horne and Will Jenkins on the Morning Show at 8:03 a.m. Wednesday.
