An amended version of a 2021 appropriation that provided for a six-percent pay increase for county employees was recommended for approval by the Finance Committee of the Jefferson County Quorum Court Tuesday night.

County Judge Gerald Robinson said the amendment applies to only one person.

The raise will be retroactive to Sept. 1, 2021.

Also recommended for approval was a resolution authorizing Robinson to apply for a $75,000 grant from the Arkansas Unpaved Grants Program so that work can be done on Summers Road.

According to the resolution, the County Road Department plans to replace four culverts, SS Rip Rap and SB2 on the road to eliminate the problems of road flooding caused by a nearby creek. In addition, the road department to cover the $75,000 match.

An appropriation ordinance requiring all checks to be reconciled within six months and requiring all checks written by the county for over $25,000 to be sent by registered mail was tabled until the regular meeting of the county’s legislative body Monday so that the ordinance could be split into two separate ordinances.

The idea of sending checks by registered mail came up after a $3 million check that had been written to Southeast Arkansas College from American Rescue Act money (COVID-19) was lost in the mail and never delivered.

Robinson explained the ordinances this way.

The regular meeting of the Quorum Court will be Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the Quorum Courtroom.
