The East End Volunteer Fire Department is currently accepting donations for the construction of a “baby box” at its station at 21900 Baxley Lane.

According to the Sheridan Headlight newspaper, East End Fire Chief Darrel Feagan said the fundraising campaign is necessary because the baby box is not considered emergency equipment and can’t be paid for with dues or fees collected by the department.

Construction of the box is expected to cost about $17,000 and once the box is installed, the box will be the responsibility of the department.

Donations can be made to the safe haven baby box website at shbb.org or checks can be mailed to Safe Haven Baby Boxes, P.O. Box 185, Woodburn, IN 46797 (with East End FD in the memo line).
