UAPB Women Hoops Davenport & Beck Posts Double-Doubles In Blowout Win Over Philander Smith

PINE BLUFF, AR – Maori Davenport and Coriah Beck each recorded double-doubles to help lead the UAPB women’s basketball team past the Philander Smith Lady Panthers 84-45 at home Tuesday.

The double-doubles by Davenport, who had 19 points and 20 rebounds, and Beck, who had 13 points and 10 assists, led the Lady Lions in the contest. Tia Morgan helped out with 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals.

Davenport pulled down 11 offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for UAPB, grabbing 23 boards and turning them into 15 second chance points.

The UAPB defense caused its share of mistakes in Tuesday’s game, forcing 26 Philander Smith turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 37 points on the other end of the floor. Beck’s six steals led the way individually for the Lady Lions.

How It Happened

After playing to a 6-6 tie early in the game, UAPB went on an 11-0 run with 2:50 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Morgan, to take a 17-6 lead. The Lady Lions then added five points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 23-7 advantage. UAPB did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 23 points close to the basket.

UAPB kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 2:40 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Davenport, to increase its lead to 37-13. The Panthers cut into that lead, but the Lady Lions still enjoyed a 37-16 advantage heading into halftime. UAPB was strong from deep in the period, knocking down two three-point shots to account for six of its 14 points.

UAPB continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 13-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Beck, to expand its lead further to 50-18 with 5:53 to go in the third. The Lady Lions held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 60-28 edge. UAPB played well near the basket, scoring 18 of its 23 points in the paint.

UAPB kept widening that lead, expanding it to 70-36 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Kourtney Rittenberry’s three, to grow the lead to 75-36 with 4:07 to go in the contest. The Lady Lions held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 84-45 win. UAPB took advantage of eight Philander Smith turnovers in the quarter, scoring 13 points off of those takeaways.
