UAPB Baseball Split Doubleheader Against Texas Southern

Game 1: UAPB 15 Texas Southern 9

HOUSTON, TX —The UAPB Golden Lions rallied from down 8-6 in the eighth inning to win in breathtaking fashion, tallying nine runs in the ninth to secure a 15-9 victory over the Texas Southern Tigers Saturday.

Junior Jaxson Lucas got the win out of the bullpen for UAPB. The right-hander went 2.2 innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on four hits, allowing two walks and striking out two. Junior Peyton Niemann also pitched well, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out one.

Junior Isaiah Cohens led the way offensively for the Golden Lions, going 2-for-5 in the ballgame with a triple, a walk and four RBI. Junior Lawrence Noble put together a standout effort as well, going 2-for-4 with a double, two walks and two RBI. Junior Ben Van Maanen also helped out, going 1-for-5 for UAPB with a home run and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 4-0, the Golden Lions first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. Van Maanen put UAPB on the board with a two-out solo home run off junior D. Martinez.

The Golden Lions kept the Tigers off the board before tying it up in the fifth. UAPB put up a three spot, highlighted by a run-scoring double off the bat of Noble, which evened the score at 4-4.

Texas Southern broke that tie and took an 8-4 lead moving into the seventh, when UAPB closed the gap to 8-6. Noble and senior Brandon Simon came in to score the two Golden Lions runs in the frame.

UAPB kept the Tigers off the board before taking the lead in the ninth. The Golden Lions scored nine runs in the inning, highlighted by a three-run triple off the bat of Cohens and a two-run single from sophomore Carlos Velez, bringing the score to 15-8 in favor of UAPB. Texas Southern put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Golden Lions still coasted to the 15-9 win.

Game 2: Texas Southern 6 UAPB 4

HOUSTON, Texas —Though they had plenty of opportunities, UAPB started slow in, leaving 10 Golden Lions on base in a 6-4 loss at the hands of the Texas Southern Tigers on Saturday.

Junior Jordan Jones came out of the bullpen for UAPB and took the loss.

Senior JaKobi Jackson led the way offensively for the Golden Lions, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a double and an RBI. Junior Drew Cates put together a standout performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBI. Sophomore Carlos Velez also helped out, going 2-for-5 for UAPB with an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Golden Lions put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Velez came across to score the lone run of the inning for UAPB and get them on the board.

The Tigers then rallied to score four runs and take a 4-1 lead before the Golden Lions got back on the board in the fourth. UAPB plated two runs off of Texas Southern pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of Jackson, which brought the score to 4-3 in favor of the Tigers.

UAPB held the Tigers off the scoreboard before rallying to even it up at four in the seventh. The Golden Lions scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Velez. Texas Southern then scored two times over the remaining two innings to break the tie and grab the 6-4 win.

The Golden Lions will be back in action Wednesday, April 26 against Stephen F. Austin. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
