The Sheridan Police Department has recently acquired a commercial drone that will be used for search and rescue efforts, at crime scenes and reconstructing fatal accidents.

According to the Sheridan Headlight newspaper, Chief Jason Teague said the drone can also be used for overwatch at local events like Timberfest and the fair.

“The drone can arrive at a problem area before personnel on foot,” Teague was quoted as saying.

The newspaper reported that the drone has three cameras, including a thermal imaging camera to detect the differences between humans and animals, It is waterproof and capable of withstanding winds of up to 33 miles per hour.

Four officers from Sheridan and two officers from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office completed a training course in March and received licenses to operate the drone.
