A $5,000 cash-only bond was set Monday for a Jefferson County man accused of stealing an ATV Saturday.

Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set the bond after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge Daniel Scott, 34, with theft of property.

Reding from an affidavit from White Hall Police Investigator Clayton Cantrell, Deputy Prosecutor Beth Carson said a White Hall Officer was patrolling Sheridan Road Saturday at 5 a.m. when he saw a white male riding a green ATV west on the highway.

Carson said a short time after the ATV was towed to the White Hall Police station, officers received a call from a man who lives on Cherokee Lane who reported that his green ATV had been stolen. The ATV was valued at $1,800 and the man confirmed that the ATV recovered by police belonged to him.

When Scott was interviewed, he admitted to stealing the ATV by hotwiring it.

Carson said Scott has a prior conviction and is on a suspended imposition of sentence for breaking or entering from Magnolia.

Scott was also charged with misdemeanor fleeing and driving an ATV on the highway and pleaded guilty to those two charges. He will be sentenced in White Hall District Court on Sept. 7.
