The presidents of three separate organizations within the fire department have sent a letter to Mayor Shirley Washington supporting the proposed three-eights cent sales tax devoted to public safety that voters will decide the fate of Nov. 14.

The letter was signed by Joseph Kisel, president of IFAA Local 14, Mozell Gipson, president of BRAVE and Russell Carothers, president of the FOF and said in part they “fully endorse your tax proposals and look forward to working with Mayor Washington, City Council and Chief Howell to continue to improve fire and EMS services within the City of Pine Bluff.”

On Friday, Howell was asked about the letter when he appeared on the Oldies 1013 morning show.

Howell said that the department does not send a bill to property owners after a fire but there are situations which can arise that could result in receiving some compensation.

“That’s all part of the taxes we pay,” Morning show host Greg Horne said.
