A Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy who was working at the adult detention center was arrested Tuesday after he attempted to take contraband into the facility.

Steven Young, 24, of White Hall was detained when he reported for work at 6:15 a.m. and allegedly admitted trying to bring the items into the jail.

During a court hearing Thursday, Deputy Prosecutor Brittaney Akel said Tri-County Drug Task Force Investigator Charles Treadway was contacted by jail personnel about the contraband.

Akel said deputies also found empty cell phone cases and tobacco products in Young’s vehicle.

Treadway reported that Young was taken to the sheriff’s office and refused to make a statement.

Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set a $25,000 bond for Young after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge him with furnishing prohibited articles and possession of a controlled substance with purpose to deliver. He was told to come back to court Dec. 1.
