UAPB Softball Split Doubleheader With Texas Southern

Houston, TX. – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff softball team split their doubleheader at Texas Southern, losing 4-0 in game one and 8-5 in game two at Memorial Park.

Game 1: Texas Southern  4  UAPB 0
In game one, the Lady Tigers struck first and jumped out to a 2-0 lead, scoring a run in the bottom of the first and third inning.  The game was a true defensive battle throughout the game before Texas Southern scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to put the game away.

UAPB managed two hits, led by junior Felicia Drake and sophomore Sydney Green added one hit apiece.

Game 2: UAPB 8  Texas Southern 5  
In game two, the Lady Lions bounced back to split the doubleheader against the Lady Tigers. UAPB struck first at the top of the third inning (1-0), when junior Alyssa Wesley singled to center field, scoring freshman Remington Martinez who pinch ran for freshman Alaina Fletcher, who singled to right field earlier at-bat.

The Lady Lions added three runs at the top of the fifth to take a (4-0) lead. After freshman Tyrah Elerby walked on base on balls, Wesley followed with a single up the middle, and Green doubled to center field, scoring Elerby and Wesley. Drake would come up big with a double up the middle as well, scoring Green.

UAPB added four runs in the top of the sixth inning (8-0), before Texas Southern, made a rally adding five runs in the last two innings, but the Lady Lions held off the Lady Tigers attack to secure the win.

Wesley led the Lady Lions at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, followed by Green going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Drake going 3-for-four with an RBI.  Elerby, Fletcher, and senior Anne Gerwitz each added a hit apiece.

Freshman Kirsten Schmidt got the win on the mound for UAPB, going 7.0 IP with two strikeouts.

UAPB will back in action for the series finale today at noon.
