UAPB Baseball Sweeps Southern U. In Doubleheader To Clinch Conference Series

GAME 1 | UAPB 14, Southern 5
PINE BLUFF, Arkansas —Junior Lawrence Noble racked up four hits to help propel the UAPB Golden Lions past the Southern Jaguars 14-5 on Sunday evening at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex.

Senior Andre Greene started on the mound and picked up the win for UAPB. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up five runs, three earned, on seven hits, allowing one walk and striking out two. Junior Jaxson Lucas also made an impact on the mound for the Golden Lions, throwing two shutout innings while allowing two hits, with no walks and three strikeouts.

In addition to his four hits, Noble had a triple and an RBI to lead the Golden Lions. Junior Isiah Cohens put together a standout day at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with a walk and three RBI. Junior Aiden Martinez also chipped in for UAPB, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Golden Lions got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. UAPB scored twice, with one run coming across on Cohens’ single.

The Golden Lions then held the Jaguars scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Noble came across to score the lone run of the inning for UAPB, which brought the Golden Lions lead to 3-0.

UAPB’s lead had evaporated once the fifth inning came around and turned into a 4-3 Southern advantage, when the Golden Lions re-gained control at 9-4. The Golden Lions bats heated up in the inning, scoring six runs, including a two-run single off the bat of junior Micah Brown.

The Jaguars gained ground, closing the gap to 9-5 until UAPB added some insurance in the seventh. The Golden Lions scored five runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of junior Drew Cates, bringing the UAPB advantage to 14-5. The score remained 14-5 for the rest of the game, as the Golden Lions coasted to the win.

PINE BLUFF, Arkansas —The UAPB Golden Lions took a 4-1 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to an 8-5 victory over the Southern Jaguars on Sunday.

Senior Jacob Riordan started on the mound and picked up the win for UAPB. The right-hander went four innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on two hits, allowing six walks and striking out four. Junior Jordan Jones also made an impact on the mound for the Golden Lions, throwing two shutout innings while allowing one hit, with no walks and two strikeouts.

Junior Ben Van Maanen led the way offensively for the Golden Lions, going 2-for-2 in the ballgame with two doubles and three RBI. Junior Aiden Martinez furnished a standout performance as well, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Junior Micah Brown also contributed, going 2-for-3 for UAPB with a double and an RBI.

Trailing 1-0, the Golden Lions first put runs on the board in the first inning. UAPB’s offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a two-run double off the bat of VanMaanen.

The Golden Lions then held the Jaguars scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Junior Drew Cates came across to score the lone run of the inning for UAPB, which brought the Golden Lions lead to 5-1.

Southern narrowed UAPB’s lead to 5-2 before the Golden Lions stretched the advantage to 6-2 in the third inning. The Golden Lions scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Martinez.

The Jaguars gained ground, closing the gap to 6-5 until UAPB added some insurance in the fifth. Senior Jakobi Jackson crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Golden Lions, bringing the score to 7-5 in favor of UAPB.

The Golden Lions held Southern off the scoreboard before expanding their lead to 8-5 the following inning. UAPB pushed across a run on Brown’s two-out RBI double. The score remained 8-5 for the rest of the game, as the Golden Lions held on for the win.
