Reports from the media and AD’s say the SEC is quickly progressing towards moving to a 9 game conference schedule. All indications is the change could go into effect for the 2026 season. Currently, all teams in the conference play 8 league games and four non SEC games. The most likely model would have each SEC team keeping three permanent opponents and then a rotation for the other six games. Most competitive teams on the conference think it would strengthen their chance to get into the new 12 team playoff because they would possess a stronger schedule than other conferences. However, other conferences, such as the Big 10 and Big 12 are also looking to shrink the number of non-league games their teams play.
