A single-vehicle accident on University Drive Monday resulted in the arrest of a Pine Bluff man on drug-related charges.

Montrell Wine, 42, was taken into custody after police saw him try to remove a backpack containing suspected drugs from the vehicle involved in the accident.

During a court hearing Tuesday, Deputy Prosecutor Caleb Conrad said an officer was sent to 6th Avenue and University Drive to investigate the accident and found that the driver had fled on foot.

Detective Aaron Robertson reported that the backpack contained 28 bags of suspected K-2 weighing a total of 152 grams and a glass jar containing three bags of suspected marijuana weighing a total of 32 grams.

Conrad said Wine had previous convictions for fleeing, fleeing in a vehicle causing danger, and drug-related charges. Because of that, prosecutors asked for a $50,000 bond which Pine Bluff District Judge John Kearney granted.

The Public Defender’s Office was appointed to represent Wine and he was told to come back to court on Sept. 1.
