During a recent meeting of the Pine Bluff City Council’s Public Safety Committee, Police Chief Kelvin Sergeant presented a wish list of things he would like to have to help fight crime. The list included license plate readers, a tower and surveillance cameras.

Appearing on the Oldies 101.3 morning show Tuesday, Sergeant told Greg Horne that the cameras would be on the top of the list.

He said he is currently doing research on the cameras and has found one vendor whose products would entail a recurring cost which may not be the most economical route for the city, and will continue to look for the best and “most economical option for the city.

At that same meeting, Sergeant talked about encouraging more businesses and homes to have security cameras and presented the idea of vendors offering discounts to customers who buy in quantity. He was asked about that Tuesday.

When asked if license plate readers work, Sergeant had this to say.

Since Sept. 3 when the city experienced three homicides in one day, Pine Bluff has been fairly quiet, including over the Labor Day weekend. Sergeant was asked if the department had done anything different over that period.
