Jefferson County is once again without a budget following a veto by Judge Gerald Robinson of a budget that was passed last week in a special called meeting.
The budget in question was passed by seven out of 13 justices of the peace during a special meeting on May 5, a meeting which Robinson was unable to attend. State law requires 2/3rds of the quorum court to pass a budget, which nine votes, for a budget to be passed according to multiple attorneys contacted by Deltaplex News.
The county has struggled to finalize a budget since late 2024, with repeated failures in passing one.
Robinson has expressed his disapproval of the proposed budget, offering alternative budgets which have not been accepted by the justices. The conflict between the justices and Robinson centers around differing priorities and procedures for the county budget.
Despite the veto, the justices have the option to overturn it with eight votes. The next opportunity for further discussions and potential resolution will be during the scheduled quorum court meeting on June 9.
