Dr. Karleah Harris, associate professor in the Department of Human Sciences at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, was recently honored with the Leader Award at the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) Conference in Kansas City, Missouri.
A member of AAFCS for the past five years, Dr. Harris has made a significant impact through her research and community work, particularly in horticultural therapy, child development, and combating food insecurity. Since joining UAPB in 2020, she has launched several gardening initiatives at Pine Bluff schools and led projects supporting grandparents raising grandchildren.
“The support I’ve received from AAFCS, my colleagues, students, family, and friends has meant the world to me,” said Dr. Harris. “Leadership is about empowering others. It’s not about individual accomplishments.”
She credits mentors Dr. Nina Roofe, Dr. Barbara Stewart, and Dr. Sue Byrd for their encouragement through the AAFCS Leadership Academy, where she expanded her professional network and explored her leadership strengths.
Dr. Harris’ award highlights her dedication to improving the well-being of families and communities through education, research, and service.
