A proposal that would increase the amount homeowners in the East End of Grant County pay for fire protection will be decided by voters in August.

According to the Sheridan Headlight newspaper, residents currently pay $95 pe4r year and the ire department is asking for a $45 increase to $140 annually.

Fire Chief Darrell Feagan said he increase is needed for several reasons, including he purchase of a ladder truck.

He said the Insurance Services Office (ISO) rates every fire department in the state and that if the tax passes, the department’s rating could improve to a 1 rating, which is the highest rating possible. The department’s rating is currently a 3.

Feagan said the department will, be hosting two town hall meetings to explain the need for the tax. The first of those will be at the East Union Baptist Church on July 26 and the second will be at East End Baptist on Aug. 8. Both meetings will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The election is set for Aug. 23rd at the fire station and people will be able to vote from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
