A Dumas man was killed Wednesday when he was struck by a vehicle while standing outside of another vehicle on Interstate 49 in Washington County.

According to a preliminary report, Wayne Simmons, 20, was standing on the passenger side of a 2014 Mercedes that was parked on the shoulder of the highway near mile marker 48.

The report said a 2006 Chrysler that was southbound veered off the roadway to the right and sideswiped the passenger side of the Mercedes, then hit Simmons before coming to rest in the roadway facing south.

Simmons was taken to a Fayetteville hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The report did not identify the driver of the Chrysler.

The accident was reported at 10:35 p.m. and the death was  the 336th so far this year on the state’s highways.
