Former Pine Bluff Police Chief and current City Council member Ivan Whitfield said Monday that current Chief Kelvin Sergeant should go to Mayor Shirley Washington and ask for additional resources in an effort to reduce the number of shootings and homicides in the city.

Whitfleld appeared on the Oldies 101.3 morning show and talked about the shooting on the parking lot of the Circle N on West 28th Avenue that resulted in injuries to seven people. He said he was not surprised that the shooting occurred at that location because there have been prior incidents at the same location in the past.

Floyd Donald, who is the host of Talk Back Live on 99.3 also participated in the discussion and called for Sergeant to resign, a suggestion Whitfield opposed.

Whitfield said the department should place cameras in hot spots in order to try and identify the person or persons responsible.

“Within a few hours they could almost determine where the shooting came from and what car they drove off in but they missed that opportunity,” he said.

He also discussed what he said was a root of the problem, lack of discipline.

He also predicted more incidents if action is not taken.
