A $7,000 cash-only bond was set Thursday for a Monticello man arrested on drug-related charges.

Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set the bond after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge Robert McKenzie III, 25, with possession of controlled substance methamphetamine.

Reading from a probable cause affidavit from sheriff’s Investigator Morgan Carter, Deputy Prosecutor Mircha King said on Tuesday, investigators conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that had failed to stop at a stop sign at Market Street and Pines Mall Drive.

During a pat-down search, investigators found a cigarette box containing a plastic bag with a crystal-like substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine and weighed 3.1 grams.

When he was questioned, McKenzie III said he had had a drug problem since 2016 and said the drugs in the box were his.

In addition to the pending felony charge, McKenzie III has multiple pending traffic charges and failures to appear in courts at White Hall and Jefferson County.

He was told to come back to court on July 26
