The director of the Pine Bluff Advertising and Promotion Commission said Monday that there are currently two vacancies on the seven-member commission.

Appearing on the Oldies 1013 morning show, Sherrie Storie explained that, unlike other commissions, the Mayor does not make the appointments. Instead, current members of the commission decide on new members which must be confirmed by a majority of the city council.

State law provides that two members must be government representatives while four others must be owners or managers of hotels, motels, or eating places and the seventh member is chosen at large. Currently, two of the four tourism-related positions are vacant and Storie said there have been applicants for those positions, but no one has been selected as yet.

Storie said Pine Bluff approved a tourism-related tax in 1977 and it was first collected in 1978 again under state law, a separate commission was required to be created to collect, deposit and spend the tax.

She then explained how the tax works.

Storie also talked about the purpose of the tax in an exchange with morning show host Greg Horne.
