PINE BLUFF, Ark. — Parents, educators and community members gathered Tuesday evening in Pine Bluff to discuss recent challenges facing the Pine Bluff School District and ways the public can become more involved in supporting local schools.

The meeting followed a period that has included a reported $3.2 million loss connected to a phishing scam, the resignation of the district superintendent and concerns about academic performance.

Representatives from Public School Strong, a national public education advocacy organization with a chapter in Little Rock, attended the meeting. Former educator Julia Taylor and Little Rock teacher Latoya Morgan Phillips were invited to Pine Bluff by community organizer Kymara Seals.

Seals has helped organize previous community meetings focused on issues facing the district. Organizers discussed the possibility of establishing a Public School Strong chapter in Pine Bluff to encourage continued involvement by parents and other residents.

Several school board members also attended the meeting and participated in discussions about communication and cooperation between the district, school board and community.

Topics included public accountability, community participation and preparation for possible changes in federal education funding.

Organizers said continued involvement by parents, educators and residents could provide additional support for the district as it works through its current financial, administrative and academic challenges.
