WASHINGTON — The price of a First-Class Mail Forever stamp could increase by four cents this summer under proposed rate changes announced by the U.S. Postal Service.
The Postal Service has filed notice with the Postal Regulatory Commission seeking to increase the price of a Forever stamp from 78 cents to 82 cents beginning July 12.
Under the proposal, the price of a one-ounce metered letter would increase from 74 cents to 78 cents, while domestic postcards would rise from 61 cents to 65 cents. International postcards and one-ounce international letters would increase from $1.70 to $1.75.
The price for each additional ounce on single-piece letters would remain at 29 cents.
Overall, the proposed changes would increase mailing service prices by approximately 4.8 percent. Additional adjustments are also being sought for other First-Class Mail products, periodicals, marketing mail, package services and some special services.
Postal Service officials cited increasing operating costs and ongoing financial challenges as factors behind the proposed increases. The Postal Regulatory Commission will review the changes before the new rates are scheduled to take effect.
