A Pine Bluff man was arrested Saturday after he allegedly shot his wife during an altercation.

Garry Stovall, 46, was taken into custody after police were sent to the Emergency Room at Jefferson Regional Hospital where a gunshot victim had been brought in.

Chief Deputy Prosecutor Jill Reed said police talked to the victim.

Reed said Stovall was not questioned after he asked for an attorney.

She said he had a previous conviction in 1995 on a drug related charge and other felony convictions from Pulaski and Arkansas Counties.

Because of the prior convictions, Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set a $100,000 bond after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge Stovall with first-degree battery and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

He was ordered to have no contact with his wife and told to come back to court Sept. 8. He said he would hire his own attorney.
