Voters in the Watson Chapel School District voted to approve a new millage that will go to fund construction of a new high school and other projects for the district.

The vote, which passed with 220 votes for and 209 votes against, came down to the wire as the winning votes came across when the final poling site closed.

The project will cost $23 Million, and the State of Arkansas will provide more than $14 Million for the project, while the District will provide the remainder of the amount. Interim Superintendent Tom Wilson was visibly emotional when the win was announced. He spoke with Deltaplex News to give his thoughts on what the millage means to him.

Wilson said planning will begin soon because construction has to begin within 18 months.

School Board Member Alan Frazier said the millage wasn’t about politics, but was for the children.

Frazier said he believes that the millage passing is not only a win for the Watson Chapel School District, but for the City of Pine Bluff as well.
