The Monticello City Council approved a rate hike that will keep the Solid Waste Department in the black.

According to the Advance Monticellonian newspaper, the rate increase means that the cost for trash carts will go to $18 per month while large dumpsters will cost $70 per month.

The newspaper reported that the solid waste budget has been running in the red and with the new rates, an additional $236,173 in revenue is expected to be generated. That will not only cover the current deficit of $77,380 but will provide a cushion of $159,000.

The ordinance was approved by a vote of 7-1 with council member Mike Wigley casting the only no vote.
