Sheridan District Court has announced an amnesty program for non-violent misdemeanor offenders.

According to the Sheridan Headlight newspaper, District Judge Gibson said people with misdemeanor warrants can present themselves to the Sheridan Police Department or Grant County Sheriff’s Office, pay a $50 warrant service fee and they will receive a new court date to handle the failure to appear and underlying charges.

You will not have to go to jail or post a bond, Gibson said.

The amnesty period will continue until Feb. 24 at 4 p.m. and people charged with violent offenses will not be eligible for the amnesty.

The amnesty program followed a warrant round-up conducted by the sheriff’s office on Jan. 1.

Sheriff Pete Roberts said there are currently about 2,000 outstanding warrants with a total dollar value of about $1 million. Roberts said publicizing a warrant round-up helps to jog people’s memories and more of them show up to take care of the outstanding warrants.
