The City of Sheridan has challenged the results of the 2020 census that resulted in the city being classified as a “rural city” rather than “an urban city.”

According to the Sheridan Headlight newspaper, in 2010, Sheridan was classified as “Urban qualifying area” since it had 4,603 individuals. In the 2020 census, the report showed 4,920 individuals but that fell short of the census bureau’s new urban classification criteria of 5,000 or more.

A letter from Mayor Cain Nattin said the 2020 census did not include at least seven annexations that have taken place because the State of Arkansas did not include those annexations. According to a report, annexations have not been reported since 1975.

The newspaper reported that a total of 128 individuals not counted in 2020 was 128 which would push Sheridan over the 5,000 mark.
