When voters go to the polls on May 9 to decide whether or not to extend the five-eight cent Go Forward Sales Tax for another seven years, they will also be voting on a new three-eights cent tax dedicated to public safety.

That tax is expected to generate about $3 million annually and unlike the Go Forward sales tax, will be permanent. The money would be split evenly between the police and fire departments.

At a press conference Tuesday morning, Mayor Shirley Washington talked about that tax.

Also speaking was Council Member Glen Brown Jr., who is the chairman of the council’s Public Safety Committee.

Council Member LaTisha Brunson also announced her support for the tax.
