The City Council at Monticello has approved a new pay scale for the Monticello Police Department, separating it from the city’s general pay scale.

According to the Advance Monticellonian newspaper, the new pay scale will consider factors such as years of experience and certifications holding the most weight.

Police Chief Carlos Garcia told the council the change will be helpful because there are two officers currently working for other agencies who want to come to Monticello and now that the pay is competitive with other agencies, they will be able to recruit.

The newspaper reported that the police department has lost approximately 20 percent of its workforce due to retirements and transfers to other agencies.
