The McGehee School District has lifted its face mask mandate after the number of COVID-19 cases in the district continued to decline, but said masks are still “highly recommended.”

According to the McGehee-Dermott Times-News, the school board voted to make mask wearing optional based on the recommendation of school nurse Sara Williams who said she based her recommendation on information from the Arkansas Department of Health and the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement.

The newspaper reported that as of Monday, the district had less than five students and staff members in isolation after testing positive for COVID-19 and five in quarantine due to close contact t.

District Officials say they will continue to monitor cases and make adjustments when necessary.
