Congressman Bruce Westerman said Congress is continuing work on federal funding legislation while also advancing energy, public lands and economic development initiatives that could impact Arkansas.

During a radio interview Thursday morning, Westerman discussed ongoing efforts in Washington to approve funding for U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

He said lawmakers were awaiting Senate action on the legislation before it returns to the House for consideration.

Westerman also addressed national discussions surrounding food quality, health and agriculture. He said concerns about food additives and preservatives have become part of a broader political debate despite widespread interest in healthier food options.

The congressman pointed to recent border security efforts, saying federal officials have reported a decline in illegal drug trafficking across the southern border compared to previous years.

Westerman also highlighted energy opportunities that could benefit South Arkansas. As chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, he said emerging geothermal technology could create new economic development opportunities in areas with favorable geological formations.

The congressman said his committee will hold a hearing June 12 at Hot Springs National Park focused on renewing the Great American Outdoors Act, a program designed to address maintenance needs at national parks and other federal lands.

Westerman also said he expects continued economic activity and investment at facilities such as the Pine Bluff Arsenal and Highland Industrial Park as federal and private-sector projects continue across the Fourth Congressional District.
