The Watson Chapel School District has been awarded a $200,000 grant from the School Nutrition Foundation (SNF)to renovate and modernize its high school cafeteria.
The grant, known as the AmTab K-12 Food Court Furniture Grant, will fund the purchase of new school cafeteria furniture. The funds were awarded to Paula Bailey, Food Service Director for the district, whose application highlighted the urgent need for a more inviting and functional dining space for students and the broader school community.
Bailey described the current cafeteria as “industrial and drab,” noting that the outdated, heavy, and difficult-to-clean furniture does little to reflect the vibrancy of the school. Despite efforts by staff to liven up the space with colorful images of students and events, the atmosphere has remained uninviting.
“Our surveys list the cafeteria’s atmosphere as one of the main reasons students prefer not to eat lunch there,” Bailey said. “The cafeteria is also used by our band and dance programs and other community groups. Upgrades are needed to provide them with a more functional area and a nicer, more inviting space for celebratory school events.”
Bailey hopes the cafeteria’s new look will help increase student participation in school meal programs, which currently sits at around 45% despite the school’s Provision 2 status, which allows all students to receive meals free of charge.
Improved participation could ease budget concerns and promote healthier eating habits among students.
The school district will now begin working closely with AmTab representatives to assess specific needs and design a new, welcoming environment for students and staff.
The cafeteria renovation is expected to have lasting impacts not only on student dining experiences but also on the school’s ability to host community events and support extracurricular programs in a more suitable space.
