Walmart CEO Doug McMillon, who has led the nation’s largest retailer through more than a decade of sweeping technological transformation and workplace investment, will retire in January 2026, the company announced Friday.

McMillon, who has served as CEO since 2014, will step down on Jan. 31, 2026. He will remain on Walmart’s Board of Directors until June and continue as an advisor to his successor through fiscal year 2027.

Walmart has named John Furner, a long-time company insider and current head of Walmart U.S., as its next chief executive. Furner will assume the role on Feb. 1, 2026.

“After starting as an hourly associate and being with us for over 30 years in a variety of leadership roles across all three of our operating segments, John understands every dimension of our business — from the sales floor to global strategy,” Greg Penner, Chairman of Walmart Inc., said in a statement. “He has proven that he can deliver results while living our values.”

According to Walmart, Furner began his career with the company in 1993 as an hourly associate and went on to hold key roles in merchandising, operations, and sourcing. His experience includes working in multiple countries and serving as President and CEO of Sam’s Club U.S. before taking over Walmart’s domestic operations.

McMillon’s departure marks the end of a significant era for the Bentonville-based retailer. Under his leadership, Walmart expanded its digital capabilities, lowered prices for customers, and embraced new technologies — including artificial intelligence — to improve both customer experience and store operations. He also championed major investments in Walmart’s workforce, raising wages, expanding parental leave, and launching programs that help employees earn certificates or college degrees.

“Serving as Walmart’s CEO has been a great honor and I’m thankful to our Board and the Walton family for the opportunity,” McMillon said. “I’m incredibly proud of what our associates accomplished and deeply grateful for their commitment to our customers, to each other and to the communities we serve. Thank you, everyone!”

Furner will become just the sixth CEO in Walmart’s history as he prepares to guide the retail giant into its next chapter.
