Toys for Tots Literacy Program Expands Efforts to Boost Reading in Southeast Arkansas

With literacy rates continuing to lag among Arkansas students, the Toys for Tots Literacy Program is expanding efforts to provide books and reading resources to children across Southeast Arkansas.

Educators say reading struggles remain a significant challenge, with approximately two-thirds of Arkansas youth reading below grade level. For many students, especially in early grades, limited literacy skills can make classroom learning increasingly difficult as they progress through school.

The Toys for Tots Literacy Program aims to address that gap by partnering with schools in low-income communities to provide access to books and promote reading development. The program focuses on helping children build foundational literacy skills that are critical for long-term academic success.

Matthew Yarnell, the Coordinator for Toys for Tots in Clevaland, Dallas, Jefferson, and Lincoln Counties, spoke with Deltaplex News about the the book drive.

Organizers say access to age-appropriate books and consistent reading support is essential, particularly for students attending Title I schools, where resources can be limited and families often face financial barriers.

Through a national partnership with the National Association of ESEA State Program Administrators, the program distributes books to schools during March, which is recognized as National Reading Month. Schools can request materials, and books are provided at no cost, thanks to donor support. Many of the books focus on STEAM subjects as well as general interest topics aimed at encouraging both learning and enjoyment.

Yarnell spoke more about the type of books they are looking for.

Books will be handed out at several community events and festivals in the coming weeks as well.

Donations can be dropped off at several locations across the area, including local libraries, the Cleveland County Herald office, Rison Pharmacy, JB Speedy Burger, Ephesus Bookstore, McFarland Eye Care, Cable Lynx and Oliver Furniture. Monetary donations are also accepted and can be mailed to the Toys for Tots coordinator in Rison or submitted online.
