The Sheridan School District is asking voters to extend the current debt service millage rate for another nine years, according to the Sheridan Headlight newspaper.

Sheridan Superintendent Chad Pitts said the additional funds will be used to help pay for a East End Elementary School to be located next to the East End Middle School.

He said if the extension is approved, Sheridan would be able to receive $11.5 million from the state in partnership funding to go toward the costs of the new school. If the millage fails, the district would forfeit that money.

The current East End Elementary is more than 50 years old and sits on four acres of ground. The state currently requires 20 acres for new school facilities.

The extension would also help fund other projects including a multi-use practice facility near the football field house, visual signage for all schools, upgraded safety features and a safe-room to be used by East End Elementary and East End Middle School.

The election is scheduled for Nov. 18 and is open to all registered voters in Grant and Saline counties living in the Sheridan School District.
