At its most recent meeting, the Sheridan School Board heard concerns expressed about bus transportation staffing, communication and student discipline.
According to the Sheridan Headlight newspaper, the district employs 30 contracted bus drivers along with three hourly drivers and four members of the transportation department staff who regularly drive routes when needed. Several of the coaches in the district are also licensed to drive buses for athletic events and could be used as substitutes if their schedule allows it.
The board heard a complaint from a district parent about delays, saying some students were left in the rain when buses were running late without warning.
Information from the district said drivers cover 34 routes each day, traveling approximately 2,800 miles daily. The Sheridan School District is the Sixth largest geographically in the state, covering approximately 625 square miles. Approximately 1,900 students ride a bus each day.
