The Sheridan City Council heard a number of updates from city departments at its meeting recently, according to the Sheridan Headlight newspaper.
Parks and Recreation Director Joel Stanton reported that soccer, softball and baseball will begin in January. In a related matter, the council approved completing the remaining lights at the Babe Ruth Field.
Street Department Supervisor Ruth Ann Nutt reported that the city has completed extensive ditch work, replaced “countless” culverts and carried out extensive street maintenance.
Mayor Cain Nattin also discussed safety concerns on Rock Street (Highway 167) after a recent incident in which a student was nearly hit by a vehicle in a crosswalk. He said the Arkansas Department of Transportation has been contacted and the county has agreed to assist with the dirt work to construct a sidewalk to the traffic light, consolidating pedestrian traffic into a safer crossing point.
Police Chief Jason Teague said the long-term goal is to reduce the two current crosswalks to one at the traffic signal.
