The long-time chancellor of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff died Sunday at Jefferson Regional Hospital.
Lawrence A. Davis Jr., was 88.
Davis was named chancellor of UAPB in November 1991 and remained there until he retired in May 2012.
He grew up on the campus of AM&N, attending primary and secondary school before graduating form Merrill High School in the Pine Bluff School District in 1954.
His father, L.A. “Prexy” Davis Sr., was president of AM&N College from 1943 to 1972 when the college joined the University of Arkansas system and was designated as UAPB. He stayed as chancellor for a year before retiring.
Davis received a bachelor’s degree in math from AM&N, a master of science from the University of Arkansas Fayetteville, and a doctoral degree in engineering mechanics from Iowa State University.
He served as grand marshal of the UAPB Homecoming parade last week.
