John Varnell of Pine Bluff has been recognized by Union Pacific Railroad with a prestigious company award highlighting excellence in safety and leadership.
Varnell, a locomotive engineer in Union Pacific’s transportation division, received the J.C. Kenefick Safety Award as part of the railroad’s CEO Excellence Awards program. The annual recognition honors employees who contribute to the company’s focus on safety, service and operational excellence.
According to Union Pacific, Varnell was selected for his commitment to safety both on and off the job. Colleagues cited his ability to communicate effectively and develop practical solutions to challenges in the field.
Beyond his role with the railroad, Varnell has worked to promote public safety in the community. Company officials said he has educated more than 5,000 people on grade crossing awareness and safe driving practices through outreach efforts with schools, local leaders and businesses.
Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena said the awards highlight employees who have helped drive strong performance during a period of change within the company.
The CEO Excellence Awards recognized 46 honorees this year, selected from nearly 260 submissions across the company. Award categories align with Union Pacific’s core priorities, including safety, service and operational performance.
Officials said Varnell’s efforts have made an impact not only within the company, but also in the communities it serves.
