The City of Pine Bluff has been designated as one of five new sites on the Arkansas Trail of Tears, a recognition that will bring new historical signage to the area to educate visitors about the region’s role in the Trail of Tears.

Pine Bluff Advertising and Promotions Tourism Development Director Jimmy Cunningham shared the news with Deltaplex News, noting that the designation will help highlight the city’s history and its connection to the forced removal of Native American tribes.

In addition to the Trail of Tears recognition, Cunningham said a second initiative is planned to honor the Quapaw and Creek tribes, who were also removed from the Pine Bluff area during that era.

Cunningham added that the Pine Bluff A&P Commission is working on several other projects aimed at boosting tourism and preserving local history. Details on those initiatives will be featured by Deltaplex News on Friday.
