A Pine Bluff man originally charged with murder in connection with an August 2024 shooting has been found guilty of negligent homicide and sentenced to time served.
Martavius Keshawn Jackson was initially charged with first-degree murder and theft by receiving after the fatal shooting of 29-year-old Timothy Cannady. Jackson had been scheduled to appear before Judge Rob Wyatt on Nov. 18 in Jefferson County Circuit Court, but the case concluded with the reduced charge and sentencing.
According to earlier court documents, Jackson called 911 shortly after the shooting, telling dispatchers he intended to turn himself in. Officers located him a short time later and took him into custody. A search revealed a Springfield Arms XD 9mm handgun in his right front pocket. The weapon, which had a spent round lodged in the chamber, was later confirmed to have been reported stolen from White Hall in 2021.
Investigators said Jackson told officers he should not be jailed because he contacted police and claimed he shot Cannady in self-defense.
The shooting occurred around 12:05 a.m. on Aug. 12, 2024, when Pine Bluff officers responded to reports of gunfire near West 26th Avenue and South Orange Street. Cannady was found unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds near the Arbor Pines apartment complex and was pronounced dead at the scene.
With the negligent homicide conviction and sentence of time served, Jackson will not face additional incarceration but will remain subject to any conditions imposed by the court.
