At a special called meeting, the Monticello School Board in late March approved the demolition of City Park Elementary School.

According to the Advance Monticellonian newspaper, Superintendent Sandra Lanehart said the maintenance costs for the building exceeded $60,000 per year and needs a new roof, which will cost $1 million.

The newspaper reported that the school was built in 1962 and currently houses one full-time teacher, one part-time teacher, and the Alternative Learning Environment classroom. The district also rents space  to the Boys and Girls Club and Head Start.

Lanehart said the district has classroom space for both teachers and would like to see the ALE classrooms located in other facilities.

The closing date for the facility is June 30 and Lanehart said there are no current plans for the space after demolition is complete.
