A Drew County jury on Jan. 6, 2026, found Monticello resident Derrick Jackson guilty of sexual assault in the second degree following a trial in Drew County Circuit Court.
According to authorities, the case began in 2025 when the Arkansas State Police Crimes Against Children Hotline received a report that prompted an investigation by the Arkansas State Police and the Monticello Police Department, with assistance from the Child Advocacy Center. Investigators determined that a 10-year-old victim had been forced to engage in sexual contact with Jackson.
Jurors heard testimony from the victim and other witnesses before returning a guilty verdict. During the sentencing phase, the jury was presented with additional evidence, including information that Jackson had previously pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor sex offense involving another minor.
After deliberating on punishment, the jury recommended a sentence of 15 years in the Arkansas Department of Correction. Circuit Judge Crews Puryear followed the jury’s recommendation and formally sentenced Jackson to 15 years in prison.
Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Daniel Wigley thanked jurors for their service and attention throughout the case.
Tenth Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney Frank Spain commended the victim’s courage in coming forward and testifying, calling the jury’s sentence “a clear and powerful message” that those who harm children will be held accountable and face serious consequences. Spain also expressed gratitude to the law enforcement officers and investigators who worked on the case.
Authorities remind the public that suspected child abuse, neglect or sexual assault can be reported to the Arkansas Crimes Against Children Hotline at 1-800-482-5964 or (844) SAVEACHILD. Reports are accepted 24 hours a day. Anyone who believes a child is in immediate danger is urged to call 911.
