Low Rice Acreage Prompts Temporary Closures at Riceland Drying Facilities

Riceland Foods has announced plans to temporarily suspend operations at nine of its rice drying facilities during the upcoming harvest season as rice acreage across the region continues to decline.

The cooperative said the decision was driven by a significant reduction in planted rice acres, with industry estimates indicating Arkansas could see one of its smallest rice crops in decades. Facilities affected by the temporary closures are located in Lonoke, Des Arc, Dumas, Fair Oaks, Griffithville, Knobel, Parkin, Tuckerman and Dudley, Missouri.

Rice remains Arkansas’ largest agricultural commodity and plays a major role in supporting local economies throughout eastern and southeastern Arkansas. The industry provides jobs and business activity for producers, transportation companies, equipment operators and numerous support industries.

Agricultural leaders have pointed to a combination of lower rice prices, increased production expenses and changing market conditions as factors contributing to reduced planting decisions this year. Industry estimates suggest statewide rice acreage may be considerably lower than normal levels.

While drying operations will be reduced at the affected locations, Riceland officials have indicated the facilities will continue to be used for grain storage. Other rice industry organizations are also evaluating operations as they monitor acreage numbers and harvest projections.

A federal acreage report expected later this month is anticipated to provide a clearer picture of Arkansas’ 2026 rice crop and its potential impact on the state’s agricultural economy.
