Lincoln County Clerk Stephanie James has resigned from her position, effective Jan. 1, 2026, prompting county officials to begin the process of declaring and filling the vacancy.
According to a resolution issued by the Lincoln County Quorum Court, James’ resignation creates a vacancy in the office of county clerk as provided under Amendment 55 of the Arkansas Constitution and Arkansas Code Annotated §14-14-1309.
The quorum court is required by law to formally declare the vacancy before taking action to fill the position. County officials announced that the quorum court will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 29, 2025, at the Lincoln County Courthouse to officially declare the vacancy and consider the appointment of a replacement.
Under Arkansas law, the quorum court is responsible for filling vacancies in elected county offices until the position can be addressed through the appropriate election process.
No reason for James’ resignation was provided in the resolution. Additional details regarding the appointment process are expected to be discussed during the Dec. 29 meeting.
