In yet another contentious meeting, the Jefferson County Quorum Court managed to pass several measures, including appropriations to pay KS State Bank for delinquent payments on county road equipment.
However, several other obligations remain unpaid — including money owed to Deltaplex Radio’s Floyd Donald for services rendered to the county, as well as pay for the county attorney.
Jefferson County Judge Gerald Robinson spoke with Deltaplex News following the meeting to give his thoughts on this matter.
Another individual left unpaid is Demarius Mims, who provides cleaning services for the county health department. Despite the lack of funding approval, Mims continues to work. She briefly exchanged words with Justice Alfred Carroll after the meeting, after he led several other justices in voting against the line item that would have paid for her services.
Carroll once again appeared unfamiliar with several of the items under discussion during the meeting, and often asked for a series of questions about numerous items during the meeting. Robinson said it is the responsibility of each justice to review the meeting agenda beforehand to understand the business before them.
The justices did approve appropriations to bring the county current on payments owed to KS State Bank. Robinson also commented on that decision, emphasizing the importance of meeting the county’s financial obligations.
Additionally, eight justices voted to override recent vetoes issued by the county judge. The vote was enough to enact the previously blocked measures, including an appropriation of $2,475.78 within Fund 3025 – Prosecuting Attorney–Victim Witness, designated for special projects.
The overrides also authorize several transfers within Fund 1000 – County General, specifically for the Coroner’s Office: $5,954.87 from Special Projects to various line items including Tires and Tubes, and Parts and Repairs, $6,000 from Maintenance and Service Contracts to General Supplies, $2,000 from Fuel, Oil and Lubricants to Janitorial Supplies, $4,000 from Clothing and Uniforms to Part-Time Deputy Coroner Salaries.
