A $15,000 bond was set Friday for a Jefferson County man accused of hitting and choking his girlfriend during an altercation Thursday.

Pine Bluff District Judge John Kearney set the bond after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge Robert Burton, 27, with aggravated assault on a family or household member.

Reading from an affidavit by Sheriff’s Investigator Kristen Pennington, Deputy Prosecutor Joe West said a sheriff’s deputy responded to a reported domestic disturbance at a residence in the county.

The deputy reported seeing redness and bruises on both sides of the victim’s neck and chest and red marks on her face and arms.

When Burton was questioned, he admitted getting into an argument with the victim but denied choking her.

West said Burton is currently on probation in Faulkner County and has a felony theft allegation pending, as well as a pending revocation hearing.

He was ordered to have no contact with the victim and told to come back to court Oct. 24.
