Jefferson County could soon be home to a multi-million dollar solar plant, according to information presented to the Jefferson County Quorum Court on Monday night.

Apex Solar is exploring plans to build a large-scale solar farm on land currently owned by Weyerhaeuser in northern Jefferson County. County Judge Gerald Robinson said the project would require no financial investment from Jefferson County taxpayers, yet would generate millions of dollars in tax revenue annually.

Due to the proposed location, most of the tax revenue would go to the White Hall School District, though other local districts would also benefit.

Justice Alfred Carroll expressed concern about the distribution of those funds, saying he was hesitant to support a project that would primarily benefit one school district. Judge Robinson compared the situation to the Saracen Casino Resort, which is located in the Pine Bluff School District and therefore contributes most of its tax revenue there.

Robinson encouraged justices to consider the broader benefits of the project, emphasizing that it would positively impact Jefferson County as a whole.
